Carlos Sainz out of Qatar GP with fuel problem

Carlos Sainz will not start the Qatar Grand Prix as Ferrari has confirmed the Spaniard has suffered a problem with the fuel system.

Sainz, who had qualified P12 after a poor qualifying session on Friday, will not start the grand prix which will leave Charles Leclerc as the sole Ferrari to bring home the points for the Scuderia.

Ahead of the main Grand Prix, the #55 Ferrari remained in its garage and the mechanic scrambled to fix the issue. It was finally revealed to be a fuel leak. Despite the teams best efforts, they could not find a way to repair the problem.

On social media, the team announced Sainz will not be participating in the event, they said:

Due to a fuel system issue on his car, @CarlosSainz55 will not take part in the Qatar GP”

This will be a heavy blow to Ferrari, who are looking to cut down the gap to Mercedes, in their fight for second in the championship since Red Bull secured the title last time out in Japan.

Momentum was on their side after the mid-season break as the Scuderia brought the deficit down to 20 points after Japan, and minimised their losses to 24 points after the Qatar Sprint Race.

However, with only one driver left to take part in the race – and deliver some much-needed points – it will hinder the famous team’s opportunity to take the fight to the Silver Arrows. Ahead of the Qatar race, Leclerc will start in fifth.

On the other hand, it will allow Mercedes to have some breathing room as both Mercedes start at the sharp end of the grid with George Russell in second, alongside Red Bull’s newly re-crowned champion Max Verstappen, and Sir Lewis Hamilton in third.

That’s all for the article: Carlos Sainz out of Qatar GP with fuel problem!
