Max Verstappen is crowned 2023 Formula 1 world champion
7th October 2023Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has now been crowned the 2023 Formula 1 World Drivers Champion after his closest title-rival and teammate, Sergio Perez, crashed out of the sprint race.
Verstappen has officially been crowned the world champion of the 2023 season after the Dutchman finished the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race in second place, behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
Going into Qatar, the world champion only needed three points over Perez to end the title fight with five races to go. As such, Verstappen had the possibility to achieve this feat with a minimum sixth-place finish in the Sprint Race regardless of where Perez finished.
However, the championship was a certainty after Perez found himself in a collision with the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon which resulted in all three retiring from the race.
Verstappen only had to finish with three points in the bag – as a minimum – to win the title. At Parc Ferme after the sprint race, speaking to Nico Rosberg, the re-crowned world champion said:
“It’s been an incredible year, a lot of great races and yeah, of course, I’m super proud of the job, of the team, it’s just been so enjoyable to be part of that group of people.
“Yeah, to be a three-time world champion is just incredible.”
It has been a record-breaking season for the young Dutchman as he obtained 10 consecutive race victories from Miami to Italy, during his championship-winning 2023 campaign, beating the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel
Verstappen’s championship glory, and third on the bounce, means the Dutchman joins a prestigious group of world champions such as Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna to obtain three world titles.
The Dutchman also joins Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Juan Manuel Fangio in securing three titles consecutively.
