Hamilton apologises to Piastri for Italian GP turn four incident
4th September 2023Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has apologised to McLaren’s Oscar Piastri for causing a collision, at turn four, late on during the Italian Grand Prix which ruined the young Australian’s race.
On lap 41, Hamilton was in a wheel-to-wheel battle with McLaren young gun Piastri, as the two battled over eighth place when the two came together.
On the exit of the turn one and two chicane, at Italy’s famous Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the Mercedes driver had better traction and was side-by-side with the McLaren as they raced into the Della Roggia chicane.
Piastri remained on the racing line into turn four as Hamilton edged forward and the seven-time world champion stated he ‘misjudged the gap’ as he moved over to the right, towards the racing line.
The two inevitably made contact and both veered through the escape road, Hamilton was later slapped with a five-second time penalty for the incident. Hamilton was able to continue on whereas Piastri was forced to make an unscheduled stop for a new front wing.
After the incident, Hamilton took responsibility for the incident and apologised to the young F1 rookie. The seven-time world champion said:
“The incident with Piastri was just unfortunate. I misjudged the gap that I had and it was totally my fault – I went and apologised to him straight after.”
Piastri qualified one place higher than the seven-time world champion, ahead of the Italian GP, in seventh while Hamilton had to settle for eighth on the grid.
The two drivers were on differing tyre strategies as the Aussie went with the main medium-to-hard tyre choice while the seven time world champion was on alternate hard-to-medium strategy.
Following the incident, Hamilton was still able to bring the car home in the points, in sixth, to maintain his 100% record of scoring points in every race this season. For Piastri, after his unscheduled stop, he dropped out of the points and finished the Italian race in 12th.
