Verstappen breaks F1 record with 10th consecutive win

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has made history in Formula 1 after the Dutch world champion secured his 10th consecutive victory at the Italian Grand Prix.

As the sport arrived in Italy, to race in the nation for the first time this season following the cancellation of the Imola Grand Prix, Verstappen was on the cusp of history. The Dutch world champion was tied up with Sebastian Vettel on nine consecutive race wins from Miami to Zandvoort.

Based on Verstappen’s – and Red Bull’s – unbeatable form many would have predicted it was on the cards, and a high possibility to happen. Others would have believed that the infamous ‘Monza Curse’ would have prevented the historic moment.

Speaking after the race, when Verstappen secured the historic moment, the Dutch world champion said:

“I mean I never would have believed [10] was possible but we had to work for it today, so that was fun.

“It was so hard to get close and get a move into Turn 1, I had to force [Sainz] into a mistake. I tried to stay patient, it’s a long race and I just had to pick my moment.”

The record was previously set by Vettel back in 2013 when the four-time world champion completed nine successive race wins from Belgium to Brazil, beating previous records held by the iconic Michael Schumacher and Alberto Ascari.

Ahead of the event, the ‘Monza Curse’ was speculated which have seen previous race winners of Monza fail to see the chequered flag.

Igniting it in 2019, when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won, the Monegasque crashed out in 2020. This allowed then-Alpha Tauri driver Pierre Gasly to win, who suffered his own DNF the year later.

Daniel Ricciardo also fell foul of the curse when he secured victory in 2021, after Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen crashed, only to retire in 2022 when Verstappen won.

At the same time, the Red Bull team also continued to break history as the first constructor to ever secure 15 consecutive Grands Prix from Abu Dhabi 2022 to the current 2023 Italian Grand Prix.

That’s all for the article: Verstappen breaks F1 record with 10th consecutive win!
