Moto2: Vietti makes late pass on Acosta to secure Austrian GP win
21st August 2023Fantic Racing’s Celestino Vietti made a pass on Red Bull KTM’s Pedro Acosta, during the Austrian Grand Prix, to snatch the win away from the Moto2 championship leader.
How the race unfolded…
It was a good start from Red Bull KTM’s pole sitter, Acosta, who managed to get the edge on GASGAS Aspar’s Jake Dixon who had to filter into second place. Ai Ogura had to settle for third place after the opening lap.
After the opening lap, the entire field managed to get around the Red Bull Ring without issue.
On the third lap, ELF Marc VDS’s Sam Lowes and Liqui Moly Husqvarna’s Darryn Binder came together at the turn-two chicane. Their respective bikes were seen cartwheeling through the air before they landed in the gravel trap. Fortunately, both Lowes and Binder were okay and removed themselves from the circuit.
CAG SpeedUp’s Alonso Lopez and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Albert Arenas were the next riders to crash out of the race, on lap five. Lopez had his moment at the turn-two chicane while Arenas had his moment at the top of the hill at turn four. Thankfully, both riders were okay and back in the race.
With 10 laps left to go, Acosta managed his race as he was separated by 1.3s over the podium group which – now – consisted of Fantic Racing’s Celestino Vietti and Ogura, as Dixon fell to fourth place.
On lap 18, Vietti had cut down the gap between himself and Acosta to get himself in the battle for the race lead. At the apex of turn six, Vietti snatched the race lead away from Acosta. The Spanish rider tried to regain his race lead but he had to be careful as he was on a warning for track limits.
Despite Acosta’s best efforts, the Spanish Red Bull driver could not find a way passed Vietti before the chequered flag fell and had to settle for second place. In the final podium place was secured by Ogura who finished five seconds behind Vietti.
