Bagnaia in a class of his own as he secures Austrian GP MotoGP win
20th August 2023Ducati Lenovo’s championship leader, Francesco Bagnaia, was in a class of his own as he cruised to victory with little to no challenge from those behind.
How the race unfolded…
In a similar instance to Saturday’s sprint race, it was yet another great start from Bagnaia who got a great launch off the start. Maverick Vinales, Aprilia Racing, got another poor launch off the line to fall backwards into the clutches of the mid-field as the pack raced towards turn one. Unlike the sprint, everyone managed to filter through without issue.
The field managed to get through the first lap without incident as Bagnaia led ahead of, Red Bull KTM drivers, Brad Binder and Jack Miller who occupied second and third respectively. At the same time, Jorge Martin was slapped with a long-lap penalty which he served on the fourth lap.
Although the race was in its early stages with five laps completed across a total of 28, three packs had formed down the field. Bagnaia and Binder occupied the top group as they battled for the race lead as the second group battled it out for the final podium position which consisted of Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing) and Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46).
As the race continued, it was fairly well-behaved from the pack with 10 laps to go. Bagnaia remained out in front of Binder as 2.5 seconds separated the top two. Of the top three, the only change was Miller who had fallen down to P11, behind Monster Energy Yahama’s Fabio Quartararo (10th) and Prima Pramac’s Johan Zarco (12th).
In turn, this allowed Marquez to hold onto the final podium spot, over five seconds behind Bagnaia.
However, on lap 20, Marquez was put under pressure by Bezzecchi as the Mooney VR46 rider slipped down the inside of the Gresini rider into turn one to temporarily take third. However, Bezzecchi went in too deep to allow Marquez to switch back over and regain third place.
Three laps later, Bezzecchi was finally able to make the move stick into the penultimate double-right-hander of turns nine and 10. As the two riders raced side by side into turn nine, it was the Mooney bike who edged out in front ahead of the Gresini as they applied the brakes.
While Bezzecchi tried to edge out his gap over Marquez, it left the Spanish rider to contend with the advances of Bezzecchi’s teammate Luca Marini. It wasn’t long before Marini finally made a pass for fourth place, ahead of Marquez.
As the battles began to conclude for track position, in the dying embers of the race, Bagnaia went on to cruise to victory five seconds ahead of Binder and Bezzecchi who finished second and third respectively.
