Red Bull makes history as Verstappen dominates Hungary GP

Red Bull has made history after their driver, Max Verstappen secured the team’s 12th consecutive victory in Hungary to move past McLaren’s previous record set in 1988.

For a record which has not been touched for 35 years, Red Bull has moved past McLaren with the most consecutive race victories which has spanned from Abu Dhabi in 2022 to Hungary in 2023.

The previous record was held by the iconic Woking-based team in 1988 with the MP4/4 which was driven in the hands of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.  During that time, they secured 11 victories between the Brazilian Grand Prix to the Belgian Grand Prix, in 1988.

In the same breath, Verstappen has moved up the all-time leaderboard for consecutive race wins of seven which has gone from Miami to Hungary. This means he has succeeded Michael Schumacher’s second-highest record of six and now joins the F1 legend’s highest record of seven, joined by the likes of Nico Rosberg and Alberto Ascari.

How Verstappen secured Red Bull their consecutive 12th win…

Ahead of the grand prix, Verstappen was not in his usual starting position of pole as this belonged to his former championship rival and Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton who went 0.003s faster than the Dutchman’s time on Saturday.

The most vital part of the race and the heart of Red Bull’s hopes of beating the 35-year-old record was all secured at the race start.

When the lights went out, Hamilton and Verstappen got a fairly even start as the Dutchman crept up alongside the seven-time world champion on the run down to turn one. Although the two drivers ran incredibly close through the mid-corner of turn one, it was Verstappen who had a better exit and emerged as the race leader.

From there, Verstappen refused to relinquish his lead to the following pack and controlled the race at his own speed.

Despite a two-stop strategy, the two-time world champion managed to pit and return to the track in the race lead. By the end, the Dutch driver emerged victorious 33.7s ahead of McLaren driver, Lando Norris who finished in second.

The podium was rounded out by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez who started the race in ninth. The Mexican started on the hard tyres and got his aggressive elbows out with the likes of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri as he made up positions throughout the Hungarian race.

Despite a late charge from Hamilton, which looked to threaten Perez’s place on the podium, the #11 Red Bull driver was able to keep the Mercedes driver at bay to complete the podium.

Podium:

  1. Max Verstappen, Red Bull
  2. Lando Norris, McLaren
  3. Sergio Perez, Red Bull
