F1 Hungary GP: Leclerc fastest in behaved FP2 ahead of Norris and Gasly
22nd July 2023Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped second practice of the Hungarian Grand Prix, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, in a well-behaved session.
How the second practice unfolded…
As the pit exit light went green, many drivers peeled out onto the circuit equipped with a mix of dry slick tyres; some were on the medium compounds and some opted for the soft tyres.
The first laps were banked by those out on track, after seven minutes, Williams’ Logan Sargeant topped the timing boards with a 1:18.836, on the soft tyres, ahead of Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas and McLaren’s Lando Norris who were second and third respectively.
After 15 minutes in the session, only Verstappen remained in his respective garage and without a lap time on the board. However, at the quarter mark, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was out on track and remained fairly conservative with track limits after his early excursion into the barrier in Free Practice 1.
When the first laps were finally secured in the bag, as numerous laps continued to pile in, Norris found himself at the top of the timing boards ahead of Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg.
Compared to the previous session, it was fairly well behaved with no interruptions to the session. With 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped second practice with a 1:17.686, on a soft tyre run, ahead of Norris and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, two-tenths behind.
Tsunoda and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon rounded out the top five. This was then followed by Nico Hulkenberg (Haas), Bottas, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Zhou Gunayu (Alfa Romeo) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) who rounded out the top 10 in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.
