Mercedes lift covers off new upgrades ahead of Monaco GP
25th May 2023Mercedes have brought their Imola upgrade package to the Monaco Grand Prix, after last weeks cancellation, where the team showcased their new sidepods.
It has been a very long wait for the once-dominant Mercedes team, when their Team Principal Toto Wolff announced they needed a big overhaul to return to competitive form.
The anticipated upgrades were due to be shown off at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix but that was, understandably, called off due to the ongoing crisis in the region.
Following the Imola cancellation, the Monaco Grand Prix is the next venue where the team can show off, and gather valuable data from the upgrades.
Ahead of the race weekend, Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff said:
“[Monaco] is a unique event but will still provide an opportunity to learn about the upgrades to W14 – but we also need to be careful not to draw too many conclusions from this one event.”
“We are introducing the first step in a new development direction,” Wolff continued. “It won’t be a silver bullet; from my experience, they do not exist in our sport. We hope that it gives the drivers a more stable and predictable platform. Then we can build on that in the weeks and months ahead.”
The new upgrades see Mercedes return to a more conventional sidepod concept, moving away from their previous design which has proven to be fairly uncompetitive.
The sidepods are seen to be much wider than they were at the beginning of the season, promoting a downwash design for their incoming airflow. However, the undercut underneath the bodywork is limited due to the current cockpit position and side impact bars.
In addition, the new package also contains new front suspensions and a new floor, in a bid to become more competitive with the likes of Red Bull, who are dominating the championship.
