Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll is expected to race this weekend after it was speculated the Canadian wasn’t going to be able to the opening weekend due to a training accident.

On Thursday, a day before the F1 season officially got underway with first practice, Aston Martin announced their injured driver, Stroll, was going to participate in the opening round of the season.

Stroll was forced to miss out on pre-season testing after he suffered a minor training accident while riding his bike in Spain. Since then, it has been reported Stroll has undergone minor surgery on his right wrist.

In a press release, Stroll said:

“It was frustrating not to be out in Bahrain for the pre-season test and I was disappointed to miss the three days of running.

“However, given the injury to my wrist, the team and I felt it was best to focus on recovery so that I would be ready for this weekend and the long season ahead.

“It was an unfortunate accident – I fell from my bike when my tyre caught a hole in the ground – but thankfully the damage was not significant and a successful minor surgery on my right wrist fixed the problem very quickly.

“Since then, I’ve been working hard with my team to ensure that I am fully fit to compete this weekend.”

In the event Stroll was not able to race this weekend, Aston Martin’s official reserve driver, Felipe Drugovich, was able to jump into the AMR23 in place of the recovering Canadian.

However, with only a limited amount of running in the 2023 car during a damp shakedown at the British circuit: Silverstone, Stroll has reportedly stress-tested his hands in the F1 simulator to ensure he is fit enough to drive.

Aston Martin confirmed Drugovich and, defending Formula E world champion, Stoffel Vandoorne will remain on-site in Bahrain as the team’s reserve drivers this weekend.

Stroll will start the 2023 season alongside, new teammate, Fernando Alonso.
