Spanish GP circuit removes final chicane
27th February 2023The Spanish Grand Prix track, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, has undergone some new changes to the track which will feature in the eighth round of the championship, reverting to its original layout.
The track which has become iconic with the term ‘Spanish Grand Prix’ after it first made its debut in 1991 where Gerhard Berger secured the circuit’s first pole position, and Nigel Mansell obtained the inaugural win at the venue.
In 2007, the circuit added a chicane in the final sector which previously stood as turns 14 and 15. However, this season will see the circuit remove the chicane to revert to its original layout which includes two-fast right-hand corners.
When the cars approach the reintroduced corners at a higher speed than they usually would in recent years, as such changes have been made to improve driver safety with new TECPRO barriers being installed.
The official length for the Spanish GP will stand at 4.657km, 18 meters than its previous configuration.
However, the removal of the chicane will not be the only change to the Spanish circuit.
The track will also widen the run-off area which includes 70 metres of gravel and a slope of 5%. New fencing will built to protect the opening corners to help bolster driver safety.
The Spanish Grand Prix stands as the eighth round of the 2023 world championship and will be begin on June 2, 2023 to June 4, 2023.
