Formula E will introduce changes in Season 9

The 2022/23 FIA Formula E championship will introduce some new changes ahead of the sports ninth season which will start on January 14, 2023, in Mexico City.

Lapped races

Fans would be familiar with timed races in the Formula E championship, where drivers had to race flat-out for 45 minutes. However, ahead of the ninth season, the sport will switch over to lapped races instead of its set time period.

The swap will also remain consistant to full-course yellows and safety car interventions, the interruptions will be added on with addition laps. This will replace the current system which saw time being added on, at the end of the allotted time limit.

Attack Charge

‘Attack Charge’ is a new feature which will be implented this season to replace fanboost as the fan-decided system has been discontinued and will not appear in season nine.

Attack Charge will be trialled at a handful of events this season which will consist of a 30-second attack charge stop at a pre-determined time during the race.

As such, the new mode will unlock two different Attack Mode periods which will increase the power output of the newest generation of Formula E cars, Gen3, from 300kw to 350kw.

In the events where Attack Charge are not trialled, the usual format of Attack Mode will be utilised instead.

Rookies and Free Practice

Similarly to Formula 1, Formula E will require all the teams to complete two Free Practice 1 sessions with a Rookie driver. The criteria is simple: the competing rookie has to be someone who has not competed in the sport previously.

This decision is set to help provide an opportunity for new drivers to get a taste of Formula E racing and contribute to their respective teams progress.

It will also give the rookies a taste of the latest Gen3 car which is the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric-powered race car ever built.

That’s it for the article: Formula E will introduce changes in Season 9!
