MotoGP Valencia GP: Bagnaia secures title in championship decider
8th November 2022Ducati Lenovo’s Francesco Bagnaia secured the title after he fought fiercely against Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo, in the Valencia Grand Prix.
How the race unfolded…
It was a fantastic start from Team Suzuki’s Alex Rins who managed to steal the lead of the race from Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martin. However, the gloves were quickly thrown off between Quartararo and Bagnaia who were fighting fiercely for track position in the early stages.
Aprilia Aleix Espargaro soon retired from the race as he peeled into the pit lane and walked into his respective garage after the opening laps. The Aprilia rider was soon followed by Respol Honda’s Pol Espargaro and WithU Yamaha’s Darryn Binder who crashed out of the race on lap four.
It soon settled with Quartararo out in front of his championship rival. However, a crash from Marc Marquez (Respol Honda) – on lap nine – promoted the championship contender up into the top five. But, the Monster Energy rider needed to win the race to provide his best chance to secure the title.
With seven laps to go, Rins remained out in front of the pack ahead of Martin and Ducati Lenovo’s Jack Miller who were in P2 and P3 respectively.
Although Miller fought gracefully for the final podium position, against Red Bull KTM’s Brad Binder, his Ducati slipped from underneath him under braking and the Australian rider found himself in the gravel trap at turn 11.
With two laps to go, Binder dispatched Martin for second place and locked his his attention onto Rins for the race lead but the Red Bull rider couldn’t find the speed to challenge the Suzuki rider for the lead.
