Moto3 Valencia GP: Guevara converts pole into win after commanding race
8th November 2022Moto3’s 2022 world champion, Autosolar GASGAS Aspar’s Izan Guevara, converted pole position into the race win as the Spanish rider commanded the race in Valencia.
How the race unfolded…
It was a good start from the 2022 World champion, Izan Guevara, as the pole sitter got a great launch off the line and led the pack into turn one – unchallenged. The pack managed to clear the first corner without incident as both SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Kaito Toba and Leopard Racing’s Jaume Masia peeled out of the pit lane, after their pit lane starts.
By the end of the first lap, everyone managed to complete the first lap without incident with Guevara out in front ahead of Red Bull KTM’s Deniz Oncu and Autosolar GASGAS’s Sergio Garcia, in second and third respectively.
After the sixth lap, all of the competitors remained firmly in the race but Guevara and Oncu had established a one-second gap ahead of Garcia and Angeluss MTA’s Ivan Ortola, who were third and fourth respectively.
In addition, Garcia and Ortola had created some breathing room to those behind as the two riders had created a 3.3 second gap to Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact’s Ayumu Sasaki, who was sat in P5 leading the rest of the field.
SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Ricciardo Rossi became the first rider to retire from the race – and end his season prematurely – as the Italian rider crashed out at turn six, on lap nine. VisionTrack Racing’s Scott Ogden soon joined Rossi in an early retirement from the race as the British rider crashed out – also at turn six – on lap 14.
Honda Team Asia’s Taiyo Furusato quickly became another victim of turn six as the Japanese rider crashed out at the same corner as Rossi and Ogden, before him, on lap 15.
Despite a relatively good performance, the CFMOTO Racing bike of Xavier Artigas slipped from underneath him as the pack races around turn six on lap 18. The CFMOTO rider dropped down the field from seventh to 23rd by the end of the race.
Despite a last lap overtake from the Turkish rider, Oncu, Guevara managed to get the run out of the final corner to retake the lead on the run down to the chequered flag.
