Moto3 Japanese GP: Guevara wins in crash-filled race
25th September 2022Autosolar GASGAS’s Izan Guevara managed to keep it together, whilst other tumbled out on a green circuit, to secure the Japanese Grand Prix win.
How the race unfolded…
It was a great start from the pole sitter, Leopard Racing’s Tatsuki Suzuki who managed to maintain his lead into the first corner. However, Autosolar GASGAS’ Izan Guevara found his way to the front of the race, from ninth on the grid, by the time the opening lap reached half distance.
At the same point, CIP Green’s Joel Kelso suffered a high-side crash on the exit of turn nine and VisionTrack’s Joshua Whatley could do nothing to avoid the carnage.
However, a corner later, CFMOTO Racing’s Carlos Tatay and CIP Green’s Kaito Toba had a coming together. Tatay was able to continue on but Toba was forced to return to the pit lane for repairs but his race looked to be done.
Kanta Hamada joined the likes of; Tatay, Toba, Kelso and Whatley, as the Japanese rider crashed out at turn 2 while Holgado crashed out in turn 9.
With 16 laps to go, the race lead change hands once again as Sterilgarda Husqvarna Max’s Ayumu Sasaki found a way past Guevara down the pit straight. Shortly after, Suzuki and Fernandez crashed out at turn nine as he green track caught both riders out.
Scott Ogden soon joined the casualty list of turn nine as the VisionTrack rider slipped off the track at turn nine. Whereas QJMotor Avintia’s Nicola Fabio Carraro crashed out, at turn five, with 13 laps left to go.
As Lorenzo Fellon crashed, at turn four, on lap 10, Guevara found a way past Sasaki into the fast ‘S’ of turns seven and eight ahead of Sasaki, and Leopard Racing’s Dennis Foggia. However, a lap later, Sasaki regained the lead of the race after Guevara missed the apex around turn five which opened the door for the Japanese rider to overtake.
With six laps to go, the top four had checked out with over four-seconds in hand between fourth-placed Foggia and Autosolar GASGAS’s Sergio Garcia, in fifth place. Whereas the top three stood as; Sasaki, Guevara and Red Bull KTM’s Jaume Masia.
However, a lap later, Guevara returned to the front of the pack after Spaniard managed to slip passed Sasaki into turn four. A lap, after that, Sasaki fell from first down to fourth-place as he ran wide on the entry of turn five which allowed Masia and Foggia to move up the order.
In an attempt to remain on the pace of Guevara, Masia was slapped with a massive high-side incident at turn 12 and crashed out of the race from second, with just over three laps to go.
