F1 Esports Pro Championship: Ronhaar secures Haas’ first ever win

F1 Esports Pro Championship: Ronhaar secures Haas’ first ever win

12th October 2022 0 By Kamron Kent

In the virtual realm, Haas F1 Esports’ Thomas Ronhaar put up a worthy drive to secure the teams first-ever win as the Almelo-born driver fought valiantly to out-drive Red Bull Esport’s Frederik Rasmussen.

How the race unfolded…

In damp conditions, Red Bull’s Frederik Rasmussen got an even start as the lights went out and the driver managed to maintain the lead of the race into the first corner.

However, as the Red Bull driver arrived at the tight, right-hander of turn three, Rasmussen outbroke himself and this allowed Ronhaar to sneak up the inside and snatch the lead away from the Red Bull’s Dane. In the laps that followed, Rasmussen tried to regain his lost position but the Haas driver put up a sturdy defence to maintain his race lead.

By lap seven, Ronhaar remained out in front – nearly half a second – ahead of second-placed Rasmussen and Alpha Tauri’s Josh Idowu with McLaren Shadow’s Bari Boroumand and, championship leader, Lucas Blakeley rounded out the top five, in P4 and P5 respectively.

Alpine’s Filip Presnajder was the first driver to pit to exchange his green-walled intermediates for the the white-ringed hard compound tyres. However, the gamble failed to pay off the Slovakian in the early stages. A few laps later, on lap 14, Haas’ debutant Matthijs van Erven, Patrik Sipos (Alpine) and David Tonizza (Ferrari) were the next drivers to peel into the pit lane.

As a result, this set off a flurry of action in the pit lane as the majority of the field pitted for the dry, slick tyres. Ronhaar remained out in the net-race lead, ahead of Rasmussen. However, on lap 18 – with help from the drag reduction system, Rasmussen finally regained the race lead but this wasn’t for long as the Almelo driver regained the race lead on lap 20.

As the fight continued on for the race lead, this allowed Alfa Romeo’s Nicolas Longuet to slip up into third place – ahead of Idowu as the Alpha Tauri driver fell down to fourth. Out of the top four drivers, Longuet was the only driver to be on the yellow-ringed medium compounds while Ronhaar, Rasmussen and Idowu sat on the hard compounds.

With six laps to go, the top three remained unchanged with Ronhaar out in front, ahead of Rasmussen and Longuet in second and third.

Despite Rasmussen’s best efforts to manage, and utilise his energy usage, the Dane couldn’t find a permanent way past Ronhaar on the final laps.

Podium:

  1. Thomas Ronhaar, Haas F1 Esports
  2. Frederik Rasmussen, Red Bull Esports
  3. Josh Idowu, Scuderia Alpha Tauri Esports
