Drivers, fans, pundits and journalists have hit out at the FIA after a recovery vehicle was seen on track, prior to the red flag, to remove Carlos Sainz stranded Ferrari.

On the opening lap of the Japanese Grand Prix, Ferrari’s Spaniard aquaplaned off the circuit and into the barrier on the outside of turn 12. The crash bounced Sainz back onto the edge of the circuit, alongside an advertising board which lay in the middle of the track.

Mixed between the poor conditions, due to the recent downpour, and the need to extract Sainz’s stranded car the session was red flagged.

However, before the session was red flagged – while the safety car was leading the cars around the wet circuit – the marshals had a recovery vehicle out on the circuit, despite poor visibility.

Following the appearance of the recovery vehicle, a many people voiced their frustration.

McLaren’s Lando Norris was the one of the first drivers to hit out, hinting at the death of Jules Bianchi in 2014 – at the same circuit.

The Briton said:

“How’s this happened!? We lost a life in this situation years ago.

“We risk our lives, especially in conditions like this. We wanna race. But this…

“Unacceptable.”

This was statement was soon echoed by the likes of Bianchi’s father, Phillipe Bianchi, Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez and many others.

Matters were soon made worse when a Marshal was found out in front of the stranded Ferrari, in a bid to manoeuvre the F1-75 away from the track, just before Gasly’s car whizzed by.

Fan, and drivers, anger rose for those who remember the tragic events of 2014 where Bianchi, who drove for Marussia at the time, crashed into a recovery vehicle at the exact same circuit and tragically died.
