Pierre Gasly set to join Alpine for 2023
8th October 2022Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly is set to join Alpine for the Formula 1 2023 season, alongside old karting rival Esteban Ocon.
The Alpine-McLaren saga is coming to an end as Pierre Gasly will fill the final vacant seat – of Alpine’s roster – for the 2023 season. This means the French team will have an all-French driver line-up with Gasly partnering his old karting rival, Ocon.
The French Alpha Tauri driver secured a seat within the Red Bull Junior Team in 2014, and made his F1 debut in the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso (Alpha Tauri’s former name) where he finished 14th – after a P15 start. Gasly was soon promoted up to the senior team, Red Bull Racing, for the 2019 season when Daniel Ricciardo secured a move to Renault (now known as Alpine).
After a a poor start to the season, in 2019, the Frenchman was demoted back down to Toro Rosso where he has stayed ever since.
Despite not moving anywhere for the last three years, the Frenchman has placed himself on the market with some stand-out performances. Although he hasn’t had a car worthy of consistent race wins, Gasly has put himself in the position to benefit from others misfortunes to secure three podium finishes, including a race win at Monza in 2020.
The partnership between the two drivers; Gasly and Ocon, comes with some uncertainty. Although they were friends when they were kids, and the families were reportedly close, the two had a falling out which resulted in the two not seeing eye-to-eye when they entered F1.
It will certainly be the partnership, of 2023, to keep an eye on as the two race against each other as teammates.
That’s it for the article; Pierre Gasly set to join Alpine for 2023! How do you think the two drivers will fare in 2023? Let us know in the comments!
