Belgian Grand Prix set to remain on F1 calendar for 2023
28th August 2022Belgium’s iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit is set to remain on the Formula 1 calendar for 2023 but beyond that: it remains in doubt.
Prior to the start of the Belgian Grand Prix, where Red Bull’s Max Verstappen reigned victorious – despite a hefty engine penalty, F1 confirmed that Belgium will find a place on the 2023 calendar.
This comes after the promoters at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit and the sport came to agreement after talks for a race in South Africa broke down.
In a statement, F1 said:
“Formula 1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will be on the 2023 calendar following an agreement to extend our partnership together. Further details on the 2023 calendar will be announced in due course.”
For a while, Belgium’s iconic circuit was at risk of losing its spot as more venues are set to join the prestigious calendar, such as Las Vegas and Qatar.
This comes as the sport is permitted to 24 races, maximum, across a season as per the current Concorde agreement which was signed in 2021.
F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali believes that historic value, or ‘a pedigree,’ isn’t enough anymore to keep some tracks on the schedule.
While Spa will remain on the calendar for 2023, it is not guaranteed that it will remain after that season. At the current moment, three venues are at risk of losing their usual spot on the calendar; Mexico, France and Monaco.
