Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen start French GP back of grid
23rd July 2022Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen are set to start the back of the grid after both drivers took engine penalties, ahead of the French Grand Prix.
Sainz saw his Austrian race end in a fiery fashion, when his power unit burst into flames in the latter stages of the race. An engine penalty looked likely to had his way.
Ahead of practice, for the French GP, Sainz was slapped with a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his allowance when Ferrari opted to take a third control electronic unit, one more than his permitted allowance.
However, during Free Practice Three, the FIA released a document that related to new power unit elements.
Ferrari’s Spaniard, and the Haas Dane, took a fourth; Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Turbo Charger (TC), Moter Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H) and a Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K), which was one more than they are allowed.
Despite this, both drivers – and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – took an additional exhaust system. This meant Sainz and Magnussen are now using their fifth exhaust while Leclerc is on his seventh.
In accordance with the regulations, these additional components are within conformity of Article 28.2 of the F1 sporting regulations.
Meaning all three drivers don’t require any further penalties.
