F2 Austrian GP: Frederik Vesti claims pole in eventful qualifying
8th July 2022ART’s Frederik Vesti claimed pole position late on in Formula 2’s Austrian qualifying session as race control were put to work deleting laps which exceeded track limits.
How qualifying unfolded…
In a similar fashion to F3, in the session prior, the field of junior drivers transitioned between the slow lane to the fast lane in unison. After the initial lap, Dams’ Ayumu Iwasa was the first driver to cross the start line to commence two warm up laps, albeit the lap times were non-competitive.
Naturally, Iwasa threw down the gauntlet for the remaining drivers to beat with his first competitive time lap time. However, this was soon beaten by the likes of MP Motorsport’s championship leader, Felipe Drugovich and Jack Doohan with the latter on top with a 1:14.559.
Doohan was briefly dethroned from the top spot by Carlin’s Silverstone winner, last time out, Logan Sargeant. But the Virtuosi driver soon regained P1 by one-hundredths of a second.
However, Sargeant was soon demoted from P2 to P7, 0.580 second behind Doohan, after his lap time was deleted.
In normal fashion, when the session reached its half way mark, the majority of the cars returned to the pit lane for their half-time stop.
In routine fashion, at the final 10-minute mark, Dams’ Roy Nissany led the pack back out onto the Austrian circuit for the last set of qualifying runs.
In the final five minutes, Drugovich finally climbed back up to provisional pole. However, he was soon overtaken in the timing sheets by Doohan. But, ART’s Frederik Vesti put in a blistering time of 1:14.123 to jump to the top of the board ahead of Drugovich and Doohan.
Although everyone returned to the pits, Iwasa remained out on track for one last attempt to climb up to P1. In the end, the Dams driver was only able to reach P4 as his highest position.
Alongside the drivers, race control had an eventful time during the F2 qualifying session as they were put to work deleting lap times for those who exceeded track limits.
Nevertheless, Vesti managed to secure pole position ahead of the Austrian Feature Race, on Sunday.
