F2 British GP: Logan Sargeant secures pole in superb performance
1st July 2022Carlin’s Logan Sargeant secured pole position, ahead of the British Grand Prix feature race, after the American driver put in a superb performance to cement his position at the top of the field.
How qualifying unfolded…
As soon as the pit exit light went green, the usual queue formed in the pit lane as the pack slowly made their way onto the Silverstone track. Charouz’s Enzo Fittipaldi was the driver to lead the pack around the British track. However, the field didn’t go straight onto a flying lap as they crossed the start line, they all opted for a second warm up lap.
In the end, the likes of Fittpaldi and Charouz’s Cem Bolukbasi set the top two lap times – but they were uncompetitive times. On the second loop, all of the drivers started to attack the circuit. After the first set of benchmark times, Virtuosi Racing’s Jack Doohan briefly topped the timing board before he was dethroned by ART’s Frederik Vesti with a 1:39.611.
MP Motorsport’s Felipe Drugovich looked to be on his way to topple Vesti from the top spot but the Brazilian found himself in a slide at the final corners. Fortunately, the championship leader managed to catch his car and keep it out of the gravel trap. As a result, Drugovich could only move up to P3.
However, the championship leader dropped down to P10 after the top half of the field improved their lap times. After the first set of runs, Carlin’s Logan Sargeant topped the timing board with a 1:38.946 ahead of Vips and Lawson who were P2 and P3 respectively.
Only four drivers remained out for a third attempt at qualifying laps. However, they quickly returned to the pit lane at the end of the third run. The only driver to remain out was Prema’s Jehan Daruvala who was P13 as the session crept into its second half.
As drivers ventured back onto the circuit, Daruvala climbed up to the front row after he moved up to P2, 0.169 seconds off Sargeant’s pace. As the session went into its last 10 minutes, Daruvala drove back into the pit lane to put on a new set of red-ringed, soft tyres while the rest of the field – bar Vips and Hauger – peeled back onto the track.
With a new set of tyres, Sargeant managed to beat his best time by five-tenths while the likes of Vesti, Drugovich and ART’s Theo Pourchaire tried – and failed – to topple the American driver from pole position.
Top three:
- Logan Sargeant, Carlin
- Frederik Vesti, ART
- Felipe Drugovich, MP Motorsport
