F2 British GP: Logan Sargeant secures maiden F2 win in feature race
3rd July 2022Carlin’s Logan Sargeant secured his maiden race win, in the feature race, after he put in a flawless performance to stand as Formula 2’s first American winner.
How the race unfolded…
It was a great start from Carlin’s pole sitter, Sargeant, but it was a poor start from ART’s Frederik Vesti, who was quickly swallowed up by the pack. This allowed ART’s Theo Pourchaire to capitalise on the his teammates misfortunes.
Van Amersfoort Racing’s David Beckman – who was in to replace Amuary Cordeel, who was banned this weekend – was placed under investigation for a start procedure infringement. The VAR driver was soon given a 10-second stop/go penalty for the infringement.
2021 Formula 3 world champion, Prema’s Dennis Hauger and Dams Roy Nissany were the first retiree’s of the race. Nissany went wide on the exit of Stowe, turn 15, and quickly rejoined the track ahead of Hauger.
As Hauger looked to capitalise on the Israeli’s mistake, he took the inside line into the Club chicane. However, Nissany moved back over and made contact with Hauger. This contact caused the tyre to rip off its rim on the Prema. Hauger tried to slow the car down, on the grass, but he soon hit a sausage kerb and his car was launched into the air.
When the car came back to Earth, Hauger found himself on top of Nissany’s dams. Fortunately, the halo protected Nissany from a potentially severe injury as the car rolled over his head.
In the end, the safety car was quickly deployed as the Marshal’s cleared away the two stranded cars. By the end of lap five, the cars were cleared away and the safety car peeled back into the pit lane.
On the entry into Stowe, Sargeant bolted back up to racing speed to get the feature race back underway. However, Pourchaire was well prepared and managed to remain relatively close to the rear of Sargeant as the session went back to green-flag conditions.
At the end of lap 10, Vesti was the first driver to peel into the pit lane to complete his mandatory stop, ahead of Enzo Fittipaldi (Charouz), Marcus Armstong (Hitech), Clement Novalak (MP Motorsport) and Cem Bolukbasi (Charouz).
Dams’ Ayumu Iwasa had a horrendous stop, a lap later, as his rear-left tyre came off the drum. As a result, the Mechanic quickly re-fastened the tyre before the Dams was released back onto the track.
ART was soon put under investigation after the mandatory stops for a pit lane infringement. However, race control decided to investigate the incident after the race.
Despite Pourchaires best efforts to topple Sargeant from P1, the American was able to hold off the Frenchman to secure his first F2 win.
Podium:
