F2 Monaco: Dennis Hauger secures sprint race win as Jake Hughes stalls
28th May 2022Prema’s Dennis Hauger charged off to secure the sprint victory after Van Amersfoort Racing’s Jake Hughes stalled at the start of Formula 2’s race in Monaco.
How the sprint race unfolded…
Following post-qualifying penalties, Van Amersfoort Racing’s Jake Hughes found himself on reverse-grid pole position alongside Prema’s Dennis Hauger, in P2.
Before the race even started, Dams’ Roy Nissany was noted by the stewards for ‘erratic driving.’ This was then upgraded to an investigation which would be investigated after the race.
It was a great start from Hauger who managed to take the lead of the race by the start line as Hughes stalled his car when the lights went out. However, the championship leader, MP Motorsport’s Felipe Drugovich found himself at the back of the pack as he lost 11 positions.
The Brazilian driver decided to roll the dice as he returned to the pit lane on the opening lap and switched for the wet tyres, after some rain started to fall.
After his poor start, Hughes was able to return to the track but by lap three he nearly found himself a lap down.
On lap four, VAR’s Amuary Cordeel was issued with the black and orange flag. At the end of the lap, Drugovich returned to the pit lane to swap back onto the slick soft tyres.
It went from bad to worse for Drugovich as he was slapped with a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
However, it soon got worse for MP Motorsport as their only remaining driver, Clement Novalak, was found at the barrier on the exit of Rascassee. It was later found Novalak didn’t realise Dams’ Ayumu Iwasa was on the inside line as they raced around the penultimate corner. As a result, the Japanese driver pushed Novalak into the outside wall as the two drivers went wheel-to-wheel.
It was later deemed Iwasa had caused a collision and the Dams driver was given a 10-second penalty for the incident.
This incident, between Novalak and Iwasa, was then put under investigation by the stewards.
By the end of lap 13, the safety car finally peeled back into the pit lane and Hauger the inherited control of the pack. As the race got back underway, the F3 2021 champion managed to race down into Sainte Devote (turn one) ahead of his Prema teammate, Jehan Daruvala without any problems.
On lap 15, Drugovich was put under investigation once again by race control for speeding in the pit lane. As he was found guilty of speeding in the pit lane, he was given another five second time penalty.
As the race entered it dying laps, race control still had work to do as they noted a collision between Campos’ Olli Caldwell and Virtuosi Racing’s Marino Sato.
