Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team announced today that they’ve made ‘positive progress’ in their Accelerate 25 initiative which looks to try and promote diversity into the team.

Accelerate 25 was first introduced in December 2020 by the Mercedes F1 team, to promote diversity within their organisation. By 2025, the defending constructors champions will hope to exceed their target 25% in recruiting staff from under-represented groups.

After a review of the initiatives first year, the Brackley-based outfit found that 38% of their newest team members came from under-represented categories.

In a press release, CEO and Team Principle, Toto Wolff said:

“”In the first year of our Accelerate 25 programme, we have made promising progress to develop a more diverse and inclusive team.

“Through detailed internal scrutiny and with the guidance of our excellent partners, we have been able to take the first steps on our journey in enabling access to STEM education and careers and building a pipeline of talent who we hope may consider joining us in the future.

“To see a small but significant increase in our numbers of team members from under-represented groups is a sign that we are making progress, however we remain acutely conscious that this is a long-term commitment and look forward to building on those initial steps.”

The initiative has already made big strides towards their target. Mercedes stated the proportion of females working within the team has risen by 14% while staff members from ethnic backgrounds have increased by 6%.

In addition, 48 students have finished their first year at the Mulberry STEM Academy – and are due to graduate this month – while another 100 students started their journey in January.
