Three drivers; Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Racing Bull’s Arvid Lindblad are set for grid penalties for the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
This comes after each of the three drivers have taken new power unit components at the Sepang International Circuit ahead of Malaysia’s stand-in return to Formula 1.
Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas has also taken new power unit components (internal combustion engine and a turbocharger), but his components remain within his allowance of the season and will not be hit with a grid penalty.
Franco Colapinto
Colapinto was already set for a grid penalty for the upcoming race, regardless, having been hit with a five-place penalty after causing a collision at last weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
In that event, the Argentine collided with his teammate, Pierre Gasly, who – in turn – hit McLaren’s Lando Norris, retiring all three cars. He was given a 10-second penalty for the incident which was converted into a grid drop.
However, in Malaysia, Colapinto will now start further back after taking a fifth power internal combustion engine. As such, the Argentine is set for a minimum of a 15-place grid drop.

Arvid Lindblad
Racing Bull’s Lindblad is set to start the race at the back of the grid after exceeding the allowance of four different power unit components such as a new exhaust, turbocharger and internal combustion engine.
Each offence carries a 10-place grid penalty per exceeded component, amount to a total of 30 places. As such – per the regulations – the Briton is set to start at the back of the grid.
Isack Hadjar
Similar to Colapinto, Hadjar has only taken a brand new internal combustion engine in Malaysia, moving into his seventh PU element for the season. Unlike Colapinto, the Frenchman will escape the 10-place grid penalty as a result of already exceeding his allowance.
This means Red Bull’s second car will earn a five-place grid penalty as a result of the power unit change.
