Saturday has become a dramatic morning for the World Rally Championship competitors as Armstrong became the next driver to have a big moment at Rally Chile.

The Irishman rolled his Rally1 Puma 11.7km into the eighth stage of the weekend, Lota 1, after he ran wide and collided with a dirt bank that sent his puma onto its side, sliding down the road to a stop.

Both crew members were okay and soon found themselves back on all four wheels with damage to the left side of the Rally1 machinery.

The Irish crew eventually continued on with heavy damage to the front of his Puma, posting a stage time of 22 minutes and 48 seconds, nine minutes and 22.4 seconds slower than the fastest time set by Toyota’s defending world champion, Sebastien Ogier.

Thierry Neuville rolls on first test of Rally Chile day two

Armstrong had previously sat in sixth overall, 12 seconds ahead of Hyundai’s Esapekka Lappi and nearly two minutes behind Toyota’s championship hopeful, Sami Pajari. However, the roll now places the Irishman 10th overall, with this expected to drop further as the supporting crews set stage times.

It marks the second Rally1 incident of Saturday morning after Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville rolled off the road in the first test of the morning, on SS7 Pelún 1.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
