Mercedes ‘assessing’ after Gasly Monaco P3 is reinstated

Mercedes’ is set to be ‘assessing’ how Pierre Gasly’s situation impacts their championship contender, George Russell, after Alpine wins their Right of Review.

Mercedes is assessing the situation regarding Gasly, according to their team principal, Toto Wolff, after Alpine were successful in its right of review, which got the Frenchman’s podium finish reinstated.

Pit lane speeding offences had marred running at the Monaco Grand Prix, last weekend, and one driver to fall foul of this was Mercedes’ George Russell. He was slapped with a five-second time penalty for the offence, but because the team failed to serve his penalty properly, he was later given a drive-through, which dropped him down the order to finish 12th overall.

Following the result of the Right of Review, Wolff confirmed the team won’t be looking to appeal the result, but would be looking to the FIA for remedies. He said:

“Now we are assessing, as we speak, what the Gasly situation does for George.

“Obviously, there are certain timing restraints. We wouldn’t appeal the Gasly result, certainly, but we would like the FIA to look at what could be the remedies for George’s race.

“I think we are having some timing limitations and some other legal constraints, but you know, we have a reason to be annoyed.”

Wolff has said some things can be learned from the issue, as it was found to be a measuring issue from Formula One Management, which resulted in several drivers falling foul of the offence during the race, including Gasly.

The team boss claimed the issue with pit lane speeding was something which was ‘flagged before,’ and wasn’t a Sunday issue, and the result of the penalty could have a different outcome on Russell’s championship situation.

“For us as a team, and especially for George, massive implications,” Wolff said “He had a difficult qualifying session, but he moved all the way back up there, and clearly without the penalty, without us not serving it correctly, it would have been a totally different outcome for his race.

“Whether he would have made the podium or just not is a different question, but a different outcome would have had an impact on his championship situation. And that’s why it’s unfortunate.”

As Russell failed to score points at the Monaco GP, whilst Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton secured second, it meant the Mercedes driver fell to third overall in the drivers’ standings, on 88 points, behind the seven-time world champion.

Now, going into Barcelona, Russell trails his championship-leading teammate, Kimi Antonelli by 68 points and two points behind Hamilton.
