Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, which will get underway next weekend for round six of the 2026 world championship, the FIA has confirmed there will be no straight-line mode during the race.
It marks the first time since the new regulations were introduced that the drivers will lose one of their most valuable overtaking aids.
It is also the first time since 2011 that the movable wings will not be in use, when the previous generation of movable wings, the Drag Reduction System, was introduced.
According to reports, the reasoning comes under the criteria from the FIA, which includes criteria like: a portion of the circuit that lasts more than three seconds, and cars not operating at the limit of tyre grip.
Charles Leclerc reflects on “the most difficult weekend of my career” in Canada.
As reported by The Race, safety was the main consideration for the decision as the priority lies in the ‘safe running of the cars.’ By means of not allowing cars to enter corners too quickly, given Monaco’s notorious tight and narrow circuit profile.
So, as the teams and drivers head into Monaco for their next race, next week, the Grand Prix will present a new challenge to the teams and drivers as they will still be able to use overtake mode, but will lose that reduction in drag.
Ultimately, it puts further onus on qualifying, as Monaco is well known to be a race where qualifying is more important than the actual grand prix itself, thanks to the difficulty in overtaking around the streets of Monaco.
The Monaco Grand Prix will get underway next week, on June 5-7, 2026
