Ogier continues to lead the World Rally Championship’s Rally Islas Canarias, heading the Toyota pack, who hold onto a top-five lockout, but he has the young Swede closing in behind him.
The nine-time world champion started Saturday’s proceedings 8.9 seconds ahead of the two-time rally winner, following Friday’s full day of action. However, after the morning loop, that advantage dropped to 5.3 seconds with Solberg edging Ogier across all three of this morning’s stages.
Road conditions changed in the final two stages of the morning, dampening the road with damp patches and occasional rainfall adding an extra challenge to the already-technical Spanish roads.
Elfyn Evans put in an early charge on Saturday morning, securing his first stage win of the weekend on the first pass of Maspaloma (SS9) before securing a back-to-back stage win on the following 10th stage. But, on the final test of the morning, he fell to third fastest, eight seconds off Solberg, who claimed the SS11 stage win.
Sami Pajari dropped to fourth fastest in the Toyota pack, having lost position to Evans, as Takamoto Katsuta retains fifth place.
Further down the field, Hyundai’s Adrien Fourmaux had taken over as the leading driver of the Hyundai squad, overcoming returning driver Daniel Sordo. Thierry Neuville remains at the bottom of the list for the South Korean manufacturer, in eighth.
Joshua McErlean and Jon Armstrong round out the top 10 for the Rally1 runners, over two minutes behind the pace of Ogier.
