The WRC will return this weekend for the second time this month, after the Croatia Rally, as the teams and crews head to the Spanish Canary Islands for the fifth round of the championship.
It also has a new championship leader in Toyota’s Takamoto Katsuta, who picked up back-to-back wins in the Safari Rally Kenya and Croatia to head the standings on 81 points, seven points ahead of his teammate Elfyn Evans.
Last time out, Kalle Rovanpera took victory in the sun-kissed island in his final WRC season. The two-time world champion controlled proceedings and finished the event nearly a minute ahead of Sebastien Ogier.
The weather remained sunny and dry last season, but it looks like it will not be a similar feat this year, as there is a slight risk of rain late on in the weekend.
According to the meteorologists at BBC Weather, here are the latest weather conditions for this upcoming event in Gran Canaria.
Thursday
The event will officially get underway on Thursday afternoon with one stage lining up the opening day, after the shakedown. Conditions are expected to be sunny, in intervals, with temperatures going to as high as 18° from 11am.
There is a slight chance of rain with the percentages hovering around 5-11% in the morning, before dropping away to low single digits.
Friday
Day two will enjoy a sunny start to proceedings as the first full day gets underway, before cloud starts to roll in, producing sunny intervals from 1pm. Temperatures are expected to increase to 19°.
There is no chance of rain in the morning, but this does increase to a high of 5% as the evening rolls in.
Saturday
With only one spot of sunny intervals at 10am, the penultimate day of the event is expected to be sunny, with temperatures rising from 17° to 19°.
Rain remains low, hovering in the low single digits around 3 – 6%
Sunday
There will be some cloud cover expected on the final day with a cloudy start to the morning before the sun starts to break through between 8am – 3pm. Temperatures will hold station at 18 as the day wears on, increasing from 17 in the early hours of the morning.
However, there is an increased risk of rain in the morning with 25% chance, which could impact the Ingenio-Telde-Valsequillo stage on Sunday, before dissipating.
