One of Cadillac’s experienced drivers, Bottas, is set to be on the back foot before any sort of competitive action is officially underway, as he will have to serve a five-place grid penalty.
Bottas, like his teammate Sergio Perez, spent 2025 on the sidelines after being axed from Sauber at the end of the 2024 season. The Finn, however, managed to take up a reserve driver role within his former team, Mercedes, before being announced with a seat at Cadillac.
In his final race with the Sauber squad, at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the driver collided with Kevin Magnussen in the Dane’s final F1 race with Haas, having ‘misjudged his braking significantly’ before retiring from the Grand Prix.
Bottas was then issued a five-place grid penalty for the incident, and as per the stewards’ report, he is obliged to serve this penalty at the next race they participate in: Melbourne.
Despite an amendment to the regulations, where a driver will serve their penalty at the next race within a period of 12 months, it will not affect Bottas’ situation.
Now, it means regardless of where the Finnish Grand Prix winner finishes in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, he will be dropped down the grid by five places.
On the bright side, Bottas’ superlicence will be clean for his return after the three points he collected during his final season are now removed, having served their 12-month period.
