As the morning session concluded on Thursday, it marked the halfway point of Formula 1’s second week of pre-season testing in Bahrain at the country’s International Circuit.
After the opening hours, Norris had taken the fastest time of the session with a 1m 33.453s. No one was able to beat the British driver’s pace-setting time when the morning concluded, but Red Bull’s Max Verstappen came close as the Dutchman finished a tenth off the pace.
Mercedes’ George Russell rounded out the top three, six tenths off the pace.
It was business as usual with the teams and drivers as they worked their way through run plans and data gathering tests. The only interruption came in the form of the end-of-session tests, conducted by the FIA and the sport.
However, Ferrari caught attention through the session as it was revealed that the team were testing out a new rear wing. The top plane on the back has been found to rotate 180 degrees, so then it is run upside down when the active aero is in use.
Theoretically, this would mean the rear wing could drop drag and produce lift in return, just like an aeroplane does.
But, Lewis Hamilton – who has driving duties all day today – only managed to get out for five laps across the four-hour session. It was the lowest number of laps completed across all 11 drivers in the morning test. On the other hand, Russell racked up the most laps with 77 completed and ultimately surpassed Bahrain’s grand prix race distance.
