Both of the McLaren cars, and title rivals, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, are likely to face disqualification after it was revealed both cars were less than the required thickness on the ‘rearmost skid.’
Norris, on the cusp of his maiden world championship, finished the race in second behind Las Vegas winner – and title rival to both McLarens – Max Verstappen, of Red Bull Racing. Piastri managed to drive home in fourth place.
In the technical report, the FIA Technical Delegate, Jo Bauer said:
“The skid wear of car numbers 81 [Piastri] and 04 [Norris] was checked.
“The rearmost skid was measured on both cars according to the team’s legality documents submission in accordance with TD039 M, item 1.2 b) i).
“The measured thickness was less than 9 mm on both cars, which is the minimum thickness required by TR Article 3.5.9 e).
“I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”
Both drivers were summoned to the stewards for 11:45pm local time.
If both drivers are excluded from the standings, it means the championship will tighten up ahead of the final two races of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Norris will continue to remain as the championship leader, but Verstappen will be within 24 points of the championship lead, tying points with Piastri. The Australian will remain ahead of the four-time world champion in the standings thanks to a countback of victories (7) compared to Verstappen (6).
As it currently stands, Norris leads the championship, 30 points ahead of Piastri and 42 points ahead of Verstappen.
