The famous Prancing Horse is locked in a battle for second place in the constructors’ championship against the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull Racing, but the team have taken a hit on their championship hopes.
Both of their drivers, Leclerc and Hamilton, have now retired from the race following two separate incidents leading to their retirements from the race, the first time since Zandvoort back in August.
Leclerc was the first retirement for Ferrari after the Monegasque collided with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli at turn one, on lap six, after the McLaren of Oscar Piastri locked up and hit the side of the young Italian.
Leclerc was forced to take the run off as he lost a tyre and suffered terminal suspension damage. He retired at the end of turn four.
For Hamilton, the seven-time world champion had a challenging start to the race as he was tagged at the beginning of the race by Williams’ Carlos Sainz. It knocked him down to 18th after the first series of corners, but the #44 Ferrari suffered damage after he tagged the rear tyre of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto at the end of the first lap.
After the contact with the Alpine, the seven-time world champion’s front wing lodged itself under the SF-25 and damaged the floor of his car.
From there, he managed as best as he could, but the team ordered him to box and retire the car after he served his time penalty for contact against Colapinto.
It now marks the third pointless score for the Italian team, following the Chinese, Dutch and Brazilian races, and they look set to drop to fourth in the constructors’ championship after the Sao Paulo Grand Prix concludes.
