Norris has taken the sprint victory for the Sao Paulo GP to extend his championship lead over his teammate, Piastri, who retired out of the event on lap eight after he crashed into the barrier.
The leading McLaren was ahead of the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, maintaining their starting positions during the race, but the Briton kicked up some water rooted into the kerbs. This water meant that Piastri ran over the damp kerb and spun out at turn three.
As Piastri spun and crashed into the barrier, Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto followed suit into the barrier. Only Hulkenberg was able to return to the pit lane for repairs as the race was red-flagged.
After a delay, the pack returned to the pack, and recommenced after a rolling start. Norris managed to lead into turn one with minimal challenge, whilst those behind had to defend their track position. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen outbraked himself and almost collided with the rear of Mercedes George Russell, who was third.
In the end, the top four remained unchanged after the restart, with Norris heading home another victory as Antonelli and Russell completed the sprint top three.
However, there was drama at the end of the race as Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto crashed heavily at turn one, hitting the inside wall before bouncing across the track and into the outside barrier. Fortunately, the Brazilian was okay and had climbed out of his car.
Additionally, Mercedes’ 2-3 finish means the Silver Arrows now move up to second place in the constructors’ championship, ahead of Ferrari by six points. In the driver’s title fight, Norris extends his championship lead to nine points ahead of Piastri, as Verstappen moves to within 30 points of second place.
