Ogier has continued to lead the Italian rally as others around him faltered with punctures and rolls, building up to another fight against himself and Tanak.
In the morning loop, Ogier did lose the rally lead – picked up by Tanak – after Fourmaux stopped to repair a puncture on stage eight. The eight-time world champion was stuck in Fourmaux’s lingering dust and it nearly cost him 30 seconds to navigate the route safely.
However, by the end of the following stage, the last of the morning loop, his notional time gave him back the rally lead.
The day didn’t end well for the French Hyundai driver. In the penultimate stage of the day, it was reported that Fourmaux had stopped on stage, but it was found he had rolled onto his roof.
How the second day unfolded…
Ogier stood as the overall rally leader after two days of action with an elapsed time of two hours, 32 minutes and 38.9 seconds, 11.1 seconds ahead of Tanak. Following Fourmaux’s crash, it meant Toyota’s Kalle Rovanpera was promoted to third, 44.4 seconds behind the leading man.
Toyota’s Elfyn Evans and Sami Pajari rounded out the top five, in fourth and fifth, respectively. Their teammate, Takamoto Katsuta, was the last Rally1 competitor inside the top 10, in seventh.
This left WRC2’s competitors Nikolay Gryazin, Oliver Solberg, Emil Lindholm and Lauri Joona to round out the top 10 in sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th.
Thierry Neuville, Hyundai, was the leading Rally1 outside the top 10 after his misfortunes on Friday, and he led Jourdan Serderidis, M-Sport Ford and Fourmaux, who were classified 28th and 30th.
M-Sport’s remaining crews of Gregoire Munster and Joshua McErlean finished the day down in 41st and 49th overall.
