Lewis Hamilton claims maiden sprint race win at Chinese GP
22nd March 2025Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton has secured his and the team’s first-ever sprint race victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.

Hamilton, with 105 grand prix victories to his name, has never claimed a sprint race victory in the five season’s it has been a part of the championship. Until today.
The seven-time world champion controlled the race and his tyres to take victory at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Hamilton got a good start to lead ahead of Verstappen when the lights went out.
He quickly established a gap over his former title rival but Verstappen soon bit at his heels as the seven-time world champion suffered with graining.
Despite this, he managed to keep Verstappen at bay. The Dutchman soon came under pressure from Piastri. By the chequered flag, Piastri finished behind Hamilton and ahead of Verstappen in second and third respectively.
Hamilton secures first pole for Ferrari ahead of Chinese GP Sprint
Mercedes’ George Russell held off the late advances of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fourth and fifth. Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls), Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) and Lando Norris (McLaren) completed the point-scoring positions in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
The two Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso completed the top 10, in ninth and 10th.
Alexander Albon (Williams), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls), Liam Lawson (Red Bull) and Oliver Bearman (Haas) completed the top 15, from 11th to 14th, respectively.
This left Haas’ Esteban Ocon to lead the bottom five, in 16th, ahead of Williams’ Carlos Sainz and both Kick Saubers of Gabriel Bortleto and Nico Hulkenberg in 17th, 18th and 19th. Alpine’s Jack Doohan completed the 20-car field.
