Bortoleto takes F2 title as Hadjar stalls and Durksen wins Abu Dhabi feature race

Invicta Racing’s Gabriel Bortoleto has taken the Formula 2 title as Joshua Durksen of AIX Racing takes the feature race win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Heading into the season finale for both Formula 1 and Formula 2, Bortoleto and Campos’ Isack Hadjar were locked into a tight championship battle. However, this was all signed-sealed-delivered on the first lap of the feature race.

When the lights went out, Bortoleto – who will graduate into F1 next season with Kick Sauber – got a great launch and led the opening corners whereas his title rival, Hadjar, stalled on the grid.

The French junior driver claimed the stall was ‘the worst’ moment of his life as he was wheeled into the pit lane.

As Bortoleto led the pack around the Yas Marina circuit, Hadjar was pushed into the pit lane for a restart before heading out with a couple of laps behind the leader.

Bortoleto’s F2 title win means he joins the likes of Oscar Piastri, George Russell and Charles Leclerc who have taken back-to-back title victories in the junior feeder series’. The Brazilian took the Formula 3 title in 2023 and followed this up with title success on Sunday, taking the F2 title.

Whilst the championship took an unexpected turn, Durksen took the race lead after Bortoleto struggled to generate heat into his tyres after the pit stop.

From there, after the alternate tyre runners completed their stops later on in the race, Durksen held onto the race lead to take home his first feature race win of the season. Bortoleto and MP Motorsport’s Richard Verschoor completed the podium in second and third respectively.
