After a disappointing qualifying session, where the Mexican endured a Q1 elimination, forcing a recovery drive from the #11 Red Bull who started the race in 18th.
On lap 18, Perez endured a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle with Lawson which ultimately ended in contact between the two drivers. Heading towards turn 4, the Mexican dived down the inside and forced Lawson wide but the New Zealander retaliated into the immediate next corner.
Going into the next corner, Lawson remained side-by-side with Perez and the two eventually made contact mid-corner which resulted in damage to the latter’s sidepod and floor.

Following the race, Perez claimed Lawson ‘just went for the incident’ and stated the incident was ‘totally avoidable.’ Perez said:
“I had the incident with Liam, he was the first hard tyre and we were a lot faster, we targeted the inside, we had the corner and I wasn’t expecting him to be there, I had the position going into turn five, he was off the track, came back on and I wasn’t expecting him to carry on straight.
“He took the whole side of the car off, he damaged my whole sidepod and my floor. I don’t really get it, it was totally avoidable, he just went for the incident and it ruined both our races.
“I am very frustrated at how this weekend went, and I am very sorry for my Team and my people, it was simply the worse GP I have had at home.”
As a result of the damage to his sidepod and floor, it meant Perez was not able to fight his way through the field to get into the points at his home event, finishing 17th.
Without points for Perez, combined with Max Verstappen’s sixth-place finish after a 20-second penalty, Red Bull were overtaken by Ferrari in the constructors and dropped to third in the championship.
