Haas F1 have revealed Nico Hulkenberg will depart the team at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, to join Sauber in 2025 ahead of Audi’s arrival.
On Friday, it was announced the German will now leave the team at the end of the season. Shortly after, it was announced Hulkenberg will join Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber for the upcoming 2025 season.
He has secured a multi-year contract with Sauber and, in 2026, will become the first confirmed driver to drive for Audi when they join the sport.
Hulkenberg currently occupies 13th in the F1 drivers standings, with four points to his name, one more point than his teammate Kevin Magnussen who sits P14.
On the announcement, Haas F1 Team Principal Ayao Komatsu said:
“I’d like to extend my thanks to Nico for his contributions to the team in the time that he’s been here with us – he’s been a great team player and someone we very much enjoy working with.
“His experience and feedback have proved invaluable to us in terms of improving our overall performance – a fact that’s clearly evident in both his qualifying and race performances in the VF-24 this season.
“There’s lots more racing to go this year so we look forward to continuing to benefit from his inputs throughout the remainder of the 2024 season.”
Hulkenberg’s move to Sauber, ahead of Audi’s arrival, will not be his first venture with the team.
He previously worked with the team and is said to ‘have fond memories’ of the team’s spirit.
“I’m returning to the team I worked with back in 2013 and have fond memories of the strong team spirit in Switzerland,” said Hulkenberg on the move in a team statement by Sauber.
“The prospect of competing for Audi is something very special. When a German manufacturer enters Formula 1 with such determination, it’s a unique opportunity.”
Hulkenberg left F1 in 2019 after he was replaced by Esteban Ocon at Renault for the 2020 season, with the occasional appearance as a substitute driver during the COVID seasons.
The German driver finally returned to a full-time seat in 2023 with Haas F1, as he replaced Mick Schumacher.
