Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen dominated the Chinese Grand Prix to take his 58th career race win, and his first in China, at the Shanghai International Circuit.

It was an entertaining race in China as the Chinese circuit returned to F1 this season after five years.

Previous attempts failed to get the venue back on the calendar, in recent years, following the outbreak of the Coronavirus and the country’s strict travel restrictions.

Of the 58 race wins under Verstappen’s belt, strengthening his position as the third most successful driver in the history of the sport, he has never secured a victory at the Shanghai circuit – until now.

Verstappen started the race in pole position, after he obtained the team’s 100th career pole, alongside Sergio Perez.

When the lights went out, the reigning world champion got a better start compared to his teammate and led out front as Perez had to yield track position to Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.

From there Verstappen never looked as if he was going to lose control of the race, in his usual fashion, as he extended his lead over a second per lap in the early stages.

However, it wasn’t plain sailing for the Dutchman as he was forced to complete two race restarts following the safety interventions. The first came out following Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas retired and the second was a result of Yuki Tsunoda’s (RB) clash with Kevin Magnussen (Haas).

Despite the safety cars, he – in his controlled manner – dealt with these restart situations swiftly and cruised out front until he took the chequered flag as the winner of the Chinese GP.

McLaren’s Lando Norris and Perez completed the podium at the end of the race, in second and third respectively. 13 seconds separated Verstappen from Norris when the two crossed the finish line.
