Liberty Media have announced they have entered an agreement to acquire Dorna Sports and MotoGP will be ‘attributed’ to the company’s Formula One Group tracking stock.

The Liberty Media Corporation, who are more publicly known as the commercial rights holder to Formula 1, announced on Monday they have entered an agreement to take over the parent company of MotoGP, Dorna Sports

Liberty is expected to acquire 86% of MotoGP while the remaining 14% will stay with the MotoGP Management.

The takeover is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 which is subject to the receipt of clearances and approvals by competition and foreign investment law authorities.

“This is the perfect next step in the evolution of MotoGP, and we are excited for what this milestone brings to Dorna, the MotoGP paddock and racing fans,” Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna CEO said.

“We are proud of the global sport we’ve grown, and this transaction is a testament to the value of the sport today and its growth potential.

“Liberty has an incredible track record in developing sports assets and we could not wish for a better partner to expand MotoGP’s fanbase around the world.”

Despite the 86% takeover of MotoGP by Liberty, Ezpeleta ‘will continue to run the business’ from Madrid and Dorna will continue to independently run the series. MotoGP will be attributed to Liberty Media’s Formula One Group tracking stock.

The transaction between the two parties reflects an ‘enterprise value’ for MotoGP of €4.2 billion and an equity value of €3.5 billion, with MotoGP’s existing debt balance expected to remain in place after close.

Following the acquisition, MotoGP will join Formula 1 under the umbrella of the Liberty Media Corporation.
