2024 F2: Bearman narrowly takes pole for Saudi Arabia Feature race
7th March 2024Prema’s Oliver Bearman secured pole position for the Formula 2 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix feature race as the session ended without red flag disruptions.
The sun had begun to fall into dusk as the qualifying session got underway to set the feature race grid, ahead of the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
When the pit exit light turned green, many drivers peeled out of the pit lane – equipped with the purple-ringed, super-soft tyres – aware that red flags were frequent around the 6.1km Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
As the rest of the field filtered out onto the track, Bearman set the benchmark pace to beat with the fastest time on the board. Although beaten later on, by the likes of Roman Stanek (Trident) and Paul Aron (Hitech), the Prema driver retaliated and stormed back into the top spot with a 1:42.747.
When the chequered flag fell on the 30-minute qualifying session, no one was able to topple Bearman from pole and he secured the two additional points that come with pole position in the support category.
Invicta’s Kush Maini and Dams’ Jak Crawford completed the top three, in second and third respectively, with a tenth separating the top three drivers.
Although there were no red-flag stops, the F2 qualifying session was not without incident.
MP Motorsport’s Franco Colapinto was seen back in the garage, after seven minutes, and his mechanics were quick at work on his rear suspension with tools in hand. It was soon revealed that Colapinto had made contact with the barrier at turn 18.
The Argentinian was quickly released back out onto the circuit after necessary repairs and checks.
At the end of the session, the F2 championship leader and Rodin driver, Zane Maloney was seen stopped out on the track and climbing out of the car.
