Mark Grain set to join Extreme E as Technical Director

Mark Grain is set to join Extreme E in the newly-created Technical Director role which will shape the sports technical direction and ensure compliance with the regulations from the teams.

Grain will join the ground-breaking off-road electric only racing championship in the sport’s newly created Technical Director role. The motorsport veteran will help the sport achieve its ambition to push boundaries, improve innovation and performance.

Extreme E was an enticing prospect to Grain who ‘jumped at it’ to join the electric series, after witnessing it first-hand as a competitor with NEOM McLaren Extreme E team.

In addition, Grain’s arrival coincides with the upcoming launch of Extreme H which is set to be the worlds first hydrogen motorsport.

Speaking about his new role, Grain said:

“Having experienced Extreme E first hand as a competitor and loved every minute, when the chance came to join the Championship, I jumped at it.

“Extreme E continues to evolve and break new ground in motorsport, having already established many ‘firsts’ which make its appeal so unique. The opportunity to play a part in its future is incredibly exciting, especially with the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell racing.

“We don’t want to sit back; we want to continue to push and evolve. Extreme E already has a track record of challenging common assumptions and ways of going racing, and I share the strong ambition to maintain that momentum.”

Ahead of his new role, Grain is well versed in Motorsport with experience gathered across multiple disciplines like Formula 1, IndyCar and Le Mans 24 Hours.

Most recently, the new Technical Director oversaw the creation of McLaren’s Extreme E team and led the outfit to its first season of racing in the sport last year where they finished fifth in the series.

On Grain’s appointment, CEO of Extreme E, Alejandro Agag said:

“His relentless pursuit of excellence has earned him a stellar reputation in the industry and this, combined with his unrivalled expertise and passion for sustainable motorsport, make him the ideal candidate for this new role.”

Grain will take up his new role as the sports Technical Director immediately with his first event in the new role at the Island X Prix in Sardinia, on July 8-9.
