Monaco GP: Iwasa secures sprint win after Hadjar suffers problems
27th May 2023Dams’ Ayumu Iwasa secured the sprint race win on the streets of Monte Carlo after Hitech’s Isack Hadjar suffered mechanical problems.
How the sprint race unfolded…
It was a great launch from the front two drivers, as Isack Hadjar edged out Dams’ championship contender, Ayumu Iwasa, who filtered into second place. The drama unfolded later on as Kush Maini was rear-ended – and spun around – by Trident’s Clement Novalak at the Nouville Chicane (turns 10 and 11). Both drivers could continue with Novalak paying a visit to the pit lane.
While a number of drivers were able to avoid the carnage, the likes of Virtuosi’s Roy Nissany and Ralph Boschung were left stranded on at the sequence of corners. Novalak was later slapped with a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision.
As a result of the stranded cars, the Virtual Safety Car was deployed at the beginning of the second lap before it was upgraded to a full safety car. At the end of lap six, Bernd Maylander peeled the safety car back into the pit lane and Hadjar led the pack to green-flag conditions.
However, on the run-up to the first corner – after restarting the race, Hadjar fell down the order as his Hitech suffered mechanical issues. Fortunately, the Hitech driver was able to return to the pit lane – to retire – without further issues. As a result, Iwasa inherited the race lead ahead of MP Motorsport’s Jehan Daruvala and Hitech’s Jak Crawford.
The race underwent a simple follow-the-leader concept for a number of laps after the restart. However, the safety car was once again deployed at the end of lap 22 as Virtuosi’s Amaury Cordeel was found inside the barrier at Mirabeau (turn five), fighting for position with Van Amersfoort Racing’s Juan Manuel Correa.
On the restart, at the end of lap 24, Iwasa caught Daruvala napping and had a comfortable gap down to St. Devote with a minimal challenge from those behind. The remaining laps remained fairly well-behaved and Iwasa cruised to victory ahead of Daruvala and Crawford in second and third respectively.
