F1 drivers pay tribute to those affected in flooded areas of northern Italy
17th May 2023Formula 1 cancelled the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix earlier today of which the drivers have paid tribute to the people living in the flood-affected areas and praised emergency services.
On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, F1 announced it was to cancel the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after they had discussions with relevant authorities, the FIA and the race promoter, just two days before it was set to get underway.
Ultimately, it was the correct decision for F1 to call. It allows the emergency services to deal with helping those in the impacted area without the added stress of contending with a sporting event in their proximity.
The Emilia Romagna region has been battered with poor – and extreme – weather conditions which has led the local government, the Department of Civil Protection, to issue a red weather warning. The region, and others, have been significantly impacted by the weather conditions which caused flooding in multiple areas.
Even the circuit, the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, was not left untouched as the Formula 2 and Formula 3 support paddocks – and the surrounding buildings – were seen flooded with murky water.
As a result of the cancellation, all of the drivers are unified with the decision being the correct one and have gone to social media to pay tribute to those affected – and those working to help.
