Craig Breen dies in pre-event crash ahead of Rally Croatia
14th April 2023 0 By Kamron KentWorld Rally Championship Hyundai driver Craig Breen has died following an accident in a pre-event test ahead of Rally Croatia.
Preparing for his second event of the year with Hyundai, after securing a second-place finish in Rally Sweden, Breen went off the road during a test on asphalt roads in Croatia on Thursday.
The Irish factory driver died following the accident as he succumbed to his injuries. However, Breen’s co-driver, James Fulton was fortunately unharmed in the crash.
Hyundai confirmed the news in a brief statement, on Thursday they said:
“Hyundai Motorsport is deeply saddened to confirm that driver Craig Breen today lost his life following an accident during the pre-event test for Croatia Rally.
“Co-driver James Fulton was unharmed in the incident that occurred just after midday local time.
“Hyundai Motorsport sends its sincerest condolences to Craig’s family, friend and his many fans.
“Hyundai Motorsport will make no further comment at this time.”
Following the news, the WRC shared their condolences, they said:
“The WRC family is shocked and saddened to learn of Craig Breen’s passing.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Craig at this incredibly sad time.”
Across Breen’s time in the WRC, the Irishman secured 30 WRC stage wins and nine podiums out of 82 rallies.
