Logan Sargeant to race for Williams in 2023 pending super licence points
22nd October 2022Formula 2 rookie Logan Sargeant is expected to race for Williams in 2023 as long as the American driver accrues enough super licence points to progress into Formula 1.
Williams have been in the hunt for their next driver to fulfil their 2023 roster ahead of the upcoming season. As such, Williams Team Principle, Jost Capito, confirmed Sargeant has a place on the F1 grid next season – as long as he earns enough super licence points.
At the moment, Sargeant hasn’t accrued enough points to make him eligible for an F1 seat, the American requires 40 points to obtain a super licence.
In the Team Principle press conference, ahead of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, Capito said:
“For him, it was tricky. First time in FP1 to get used to the car. He was overwhelmed by the brakes especially and so he did what should do and looked okay.
“We feel he’s ready to race and under the condition that he has enough super license points after Abu Dhabi, he will be our second driver next year.”
On Friday, the 21-year-old replaced the outgoing Canadian, Nicholas Latifi, in his debut appearance for Williams during the first practice session of the US GP.
At the current moment, Sargeant currently sits third in the F2 drivers standings behind the MP Motorsport’s, newly-crowned champion, Felipe Drugovich (P1) and ART’s Theo Pourchaire (P2).
If Sargeant obtains enough points, he will be paired up alongside Alexander Albon.
