Singapore GP: Leclerc tops FP3 after weather delay

Singapore GP: Leclerc tops FP3 after weather delay

1st October 2022 0 By Kamron Kent

Formula 1’s final practice, for the Singapore Grand Prix, was hampered by poor weather at the start but Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped the session when the session was green-flagged.
How final practice unfolded…

After a half-an-hour delay, the cars were finally allowed to venture out onto the damp Singapore Marina Bay Circuit after a heavy downpour prior to the session, which left a vast amounts of standing water on the track.

Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly was the first driver to go out onto the track equipped with the blue-walled full wet tyres. Just as the Frenchman curled around the final corners, his teammate Yuki Tsunoda peeled out of the pit lane. This was quickly followed by a handful of drivers.

In the damp conditions, Gasly naturally became the first driver to set a timed lap on the board with a 2:09.894.

With just over 20 minutes left on the clock, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finally trundled out of the pit lane equipped with the green-walled intermediate tyres.

Due to the improving conditions, most of the field had peeled into the pit lane to exchange their wet weather tyres for the inters. With 13 minutes on the clock, Verstappen went to the top of the timing board ahead of Gasly and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez who were P2 and P3 respectively.

As the session trickled down towards its final minutes, Verstappen remained out on top with a lap time of 1:59.456 while the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were the final drivers to set a lap time on the board.

Despite better conditions, compared to the start, Russell and Hamilton’s first lap times were only good enough for P18 and P19 respectively.

In the final two minutes, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc jumped to the top spot with a 1:57.782  which was 0.526 seconds faster than his championship-rival, Verstappen (in P2), while Perez rounded out the top three. However, the Mexican was soon demoted down to fifth-place after he was beaten by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso.

Fastest three:

  1. Charles Leclerc, Ferrari
  2. Max Verstappen, Red Bull
  3. Carlos Sainz, Ferrai
